What Fuels SA’s Hybrid Champs?
Fresh off a standout win at Hyrox Johannesburg in the mixed doubles division, Vicky MacIntosh and Wesley Henning already have their sights set on the World Championship in Chicago this June. With no signs of slowing down, these two are proving they’re a force to be reckoned with.
If you have ever wondered what it takes not only to be a hybrid athlete but a winning one, we sat down with NPL’s hybrid power duo to get the inside scoop on how they train, eat, recover and stay mentally tough.
“I always try to push myself into the pain cave and stay there as long as possible, because that’s where real growth happens.” - Vicky MacIntosh
“Mindset is everything. I believe the difference between being good and great is all in the mind.” - Wesley Henning
Training & Performance
How do you structure your weekly training?
Vicky: My training varies depending on the season and my phase of training, but a typical week includes a mix of long runs, strength training, interval running and hybrid sessions. As we get closer to a race, sessions become more simulation-based.
How do you incorporate functional strength training?
Wesley: Strength is critical for performance. We maintain regular squats, deadlifts, presses and kettlebell work, all of which transfer directly to competition exercises.
How do you manage recovery during peak training weeks?
Vicky: I listen to my body and track recovery using the Morpheus app. Prioritising proper nutrition, sleep and structured recovery phases keeps me performing at my best.
How does your nutrition change leading up to race day?
Wesley: Nutrition is a 24/7 priority. A few days before a race, I slightly increase my carbohydrate intake but stick to familiar foods to avoid surprises.
Supplementation & Nutrition
What supplements do you use for performance and recovery?
Vicky: I incorporate Whey Isolate, Creatine, BCAAs, Beta-Alanine and Casein to support recovery and muscle maintenance.
Wesley: My daily essentials include Vita Pack for overall health, Intra Load for endurance, Creatine, and Nitro Rush pre-workout to fuel training and performance.
How do you fuel long endurance sessions?
Wesley: Intra Load is my most-used supplement. If a session lasts over 60 minutes, I’ll add a gel or bar for extra fuel.
How important is hydration in your training?
Vicky: Hydration is essential for endurance performance. I sip BCAAs throughout the day to stay hydrated and ensure proper electrolyte balance.
Mindset & Motivation
How do you mentally push through tough moments in a race?
Vicky: I always try to push myself into the pain cave and stay there as long as possible because that’s where real growth happens.
Wesley: Mindset is everything. I believe the difference between being good and great is all in the mind. This applies to work, training and any kind of competition.
Personal Insights & Advice
What’s the best advice for someone starting hybrid training?
Vicky: The competition atmosphere is electric, and you’re really competing against yourself. Once you commit and sign up, your training consistency and motivation will go to another level.
Wesley: If you want to improve, you need to run. Too many people focus only on workouts, but running is key. Break your training down into components, target your weaknesses, and build your aerobic base.
