A good night’s rest is crucial if you want to reach your health and fitness goal and improve your immune system. Sleep is a vital component of your overall health and well-being. It’s also important for your body to receive quality rest and recovery, in order to repair your muscles and be ready for another day. Good sleeping habits will lead to the foundation of a good workout routine.

But why is a good night’s rest so important when it comes to reaching your goals?

According to Mammoth articles, rest  is a crucial step in your routine to reach your goals:

#1 Rest equals fitness progress

In your fitness routine, rest and recovery are just as valuable as exercise. If your body doesn’t have enough time to rest and recover it will negatively impact your workout performance, therefore impacting your results.

#2 Rest is important for long term fitness progress

As you settle into your new fitness routine, your body needs rest and time for recovery. Practicing a balanced sleeping routine will help your body to enhance your physical and mental abilities. This will help you to adapt better to new challenges and improve your performance.

#3 Fit athletes need more rest time

When your body burns more energy, you need more rest and longer recovery periods. This goes hand in hand with your workout performance as you will perform better when training if you have rested adequately.

#4 Micro-tears of muscle fibers

When working out and lifting weights your muscles encounter micro-tears. This process helps your muscles to repair and enables the muscle fibers to become stronger so that you can lift heavier the next day. This can only be sufficiently done if you have enough time to rest and recover after each session.

#5 Push past your boundaries

Feeling well-rested will help with your energy levels to push past your boundaries and limitations in the gym. Well-rested muscles will be able to handle more and overcome fear and restrictions. A good night's rest and adequate recovery will allow you to feel confident going into your next workout.

#6 Perform at maximum capacity

Not getting enough sleep will make your exercises feel more challenging and harder as you can’t perform at maximum capacity.

#7 Higher motivation levels

Sleeping early at night will help you to feel ready for your workout in the morning. If you feel that you are struggling, try to improve your sleeping pattern, by going to bed earlier or relaxing 2 hours before bedtime.

Make sleep a top priority, as it will benefit you in the long run. You will complete your workouts easily, feel refreshed and perform at your best after your body has had a chance to rest and recover.

Tips to sleep better at night:

  • Stick to a sleeping schedule. Have specific times when you go to bed and try to relax 2 hours before bedtime, by limiting your screen time and getting ready for bed.

  • Your sleep environment should be peaceful and restful. Make sure that your computer is not in your bedroom as you will want to start working again. Remove your TV out of your room, frequently wash your linen, and always keep your bedroom tidy.

  • Watch what you drink and eat during the day as high caffeine and certain food intakes may lead to distributive sleeping patterns.

  • Restrict naps and keep them short as they may ruin your sleeping schedule.

  • Cut your stress levels, by sleeping at least 8 hours per night.

  • Exercise at least 1-2 hours before bedtime, to decrease endorphin levels.
